A disc does not slip when you have a prolapsed disc (also known as a slipped disc). The nucleus pulposus (the inner softer part of the disc) bulges out (herniates) due to a weakness in the outer part of the disc. A prolapsed disc is also known as a herniated disc. A bulging disc may put pressure on nearby structures, such as a nerve exiting the spinal cord. Inflammation also occurs around the prolapsed portion of the disc. Any disc in the spine has the potential to prolapse. However, the majority of prolapsed discs occur in the lumbar region of the spine (lower back). The size of the prolapse varies. In general, the larger the prolapse, the more severe the symptoms. It is unclear why some people develop a prolapsed disc while others do not, even if they perform the same job or lift the same types of objects. Some people appear to have a weakness in the outer part of the affected disc. Several factors can cause the inner softer part of the disc to prolapse through the weakened outer part of the disc. Sneezing, awkward bending, or heavy lifting in an awkward position, for example, may put extra pressure on the disc. This may be enough to cause prolapse in people who have disc weakness. A job that requires a lot of lifting, a job that requires a lot of sitting (especially driving), weight-bearing sports (weight lifting, etc.), smoking, obesity, and getting older are all risk factors for developing a prolapsed disc (a disc is more likely to develop a weakness with increasing age). It is best to take pain relievers on a regular basis if you require them. This is preferable to taking them only when the pain is excruciating. If you take them on a regular basis, your pain will be relieved for a longer period of time, allowing you to exercise and stay active.
